IRRITATIONSLOGIC and PLAY RATIONALE
'Island of Dr. Frankenstein' is bound to receive some of the same complaints that 'Touch Detective' games have : the story lines are not rational
bear in mind, these games are designed for kids. you will likely agree that basing a game on things kids know, and can accomplish, is better than being based on, oh, i don't know ... the Pre-Revolutionary Parliament of France ?
children are able to run around and interact with characters without relying on logic and normalcy. for adults this method of playing seems chaotic and arbitrary, but for kids it works
one major difference between Island of Frankenstein and Touch Detective games is that the Touch Detective games are set in a dream, so unusual things are (or should be) expected. the Island of Frankenstein is, predictably, inhabited by monsters, so i'm unwilling to say it should be more 'reasonable' to the adult mind, but there is a difference between waking logic and the rationality of events that take place in the dreams of sleep
PUZZLES
the puzzles fall into two categories : meeting the needs of island inhabitants, and solving two-dimensional puzzles (as illustrated by the Mfg. video trailer). both are required to advance, but the 2D games bring the game to a screeching halt, while puzzles of the first kind take place here and there, and do not obviously halt play
the first type of puzzle is interactive and fairly intuitive ; a monster needs something to resolve a personal problem and you will eventually get something that can serve that need (so long as you keep moving around and talking to characters)
the second is a different matter altogether, and are probably the biggest difficulty parents might need to help their children with. most kids will be able to figure out the fundamentals of how these puzzles work after some experimentation. the early puzzles are quite simple, in fact. the actions of the gears are counter-intuitive, but kids are great at accepting things as they are and facing challenges as they present themselves. the puzzles during the first half of the game will probably not frustrate most kids terribly
HOWEVER ... the increasing difficulty of the two-dimensional puzzles (after a player reaches the 50% point) is no longer a linear progression, but rather an exponential leap. for parents this is going to be about as much fun as helping a kindergartner master algebra ... the first puzzle after the 50% mark is unbelievably difficult (i solved it be tedious trial-and-error, (even starting the game over thinking i might have made some fundamental mistake from which i could not recover), using two sets of about 150 meteorites and 999 vaporites [the max allowed in inventory], each set of which took me over an hour to amass by sitting in target-rich environments and working non-stop ... what an ordeal!)
there was no help online, so i photographed my solutions (there should be many variations for the majority) and posted them on my website as a service to parents everywhere (Google "Island of Dr. Frankenstein" luscher dot org)
MUSIC
the music is amazingly repetitive, and will drive most any adult through the roof in under twenty minutes, falling far, far short of the interesting music found in many other games
IRRITATIONS
Frankie (your character) seems to be wearing an invisible sweater which snags on nearly everything, and occasionally on nothing - i had to restart once, he was so badly stuck ! you can typically just keep moving the joystick around in circles until the software bug allows you to move freely once more. the posts on either end of bridges are some of the most reliable trouble points
